Little History of our Tournament

Sixty-three years ago on Tuesday, June 6, 1947, the Leavenworth Ladies Division was formed. Weekly play consisted of nine holes on what was then a nine hole course with sand greens. Watering on the course at that time was done by physically dragging hoses and sprinklers. Weekly dues for Ladies Division members was 10 cents.

There were few active members when the Ladies Division was first organized, but by 1950 there were ten to fifteen active members. In 1959 grass greens were planted and a new clubhouse was started (this has subsequently been replaced with the current clubhouse). By 1964, Ladies Division dues had increased to $4 for the season with no age limit, and by 1966, the ladies had 28 members.

The first Ladies Invitational Tournament with an entry fee of $6 was held June 23, 1971, with 80 ladies attending. Twenty-five years ago, in 1985, the tournament (by then called the Alpine Invitational) drew a field of 124 players from all over the state, as shown in the article by The Leavenworth Echo.

The 40th annual Alpine Invitational Tournament is being held on June 15, 2011 and will have a full field of 120. The Leavenworth Golf Course has changed since the first invitational tournament in 1971, but many of the same players are still attending, and the golf spirit and enthusiasm remains.
